The shift to shorter, more tactical operations

The time when the US prepared for large, long, drawn-out conflicts such as the Cold War or the Russian invasion of Europe has ended and the future of military conflict has changed. Today the US needs to plan for shorter, more tactical operations such as managing conflicts in Libya, Egypt, or Syria, countless humanitarian and disaster relief missions, and counter-terrorism operations across the globe.
